I was reading back over some early posts, and they were all very introspective. My recent posts are much more interactive. Thanks for participating!
Some of you may have already heard of "The Secret," the book and movie of the same name which teach about the Law of Attraction. For more information click below.
The Secret
Today's question is, do you believe in The Secret? Is the Law of Attraction a real thing? Has it worked in your life? Or is it just a lot of hype?
On some levels, I can see that the Law of Attraction works. The example I usually give is Dan - he makes "Five Year Plans" (like the Soviets) and details what he wants to have happen during that time. So far, all of the things he's put into his plans have materialized (mission, marriage, job, freelance work, kids, etc.). Something about the act of intention in writing it has produced real results. Of course, he started doing this way before he watched "The Secret."
Many religious leaders of various faiths would say that the Law of Attraction is not only false, it's almost evil. I don't think that.
Today in sacrament meeting one of the speakers mentioned "a book" that, after he got going, was clearly "The Secret." He was using it loosely in connection with a general conference talk, and it did fit; I just thought it was funny that he was even familiar with it and funnier still that he worked it into his talk. (I do the same thing with Disney).
And the greatest question of all: will it work in MY life?
"Many individuals preoccupied by the cares of the world are not necessarily in transgression. But they certainly are in diversion and thus waste the 'days of their probation.'" - Neal A. Maxwell

Way profound B. Matt and I were discussing this because Oprah did a thing about "the secret" on Friday. I didn't watch it but I think I recorded it. Anyway, we just had a lesson on prayer and in the True to the Faith book it says that when we pray for something we need to do all that we can to make it happen. I think that is the secret. To recognize what you want. Ask for God's help in achieving it and then get to work doing it. We can sit around all day saying I want a million dollars, but if that is all we do we won't even win the publishers clearing house sweepstakes. You have to take the action. We also know in reference to The Creation, all things were created spiritually before they were physically created. I have to think that is sort of the same thing. You make a plan of how you want it to be and then go about making that happen.
I agree with Andrea. I think we can want things and make them happen, but they don't just come on their own. I think people can get a little carried away with the ideas that The Secret has to offer, like their life is magically going to change or something... (I haven't read the The Secret, but I've heard about it.) And I don't think the concept behind The Secret is anything new--it's just common sense written in a nice way and marketed well. Bottom line: make goals and then make them happen.
Absolutely! I definitely believe in The Secret, BUT I don't believe it works the way they say it does in the movie/book. The Universe is God and we can't just sit around thinking about stuff we want (they make it sound like that's all you need to do).
Basically the gospel teaches us "Ask and you will receive" but faith without works is dead. Joel is the same as Dan. Spot on he has everything he's ever wanted plus some. I think it's because of his positive thinking and righteous living along with his hard work for it. So, yes...I do believe, but not it, but not because of Oprah, because of the gospel.
I like that quote by Neal A Maxwell... hits home.
I know nothing about The Secret, but from what has been said... I don't think there is anything mystical about making things so because you said it is so. I'd agree it's simple goal setting and accomplishment.
Thanks for your post on the LOA.
I'm making a movie "The Compass" with cast members from The Secret and The Opus and several new teachers who have so much to offer.
I welcome your comments!
Thanks
